Fasting
Do you know the purpose of fasting and the proper way to fast? We take the word for granted, but the word “breakfast” has significant meaning as it relates to the word “fast.” It is a compound word “break fast.” We are essentially breaking an overnight fast from the previous day. To fast is to go without food in the generic sense of the term. But when we are on a spiritual fast, we choose to give up food in an effort to hear the voice of God more clearly. It is more than just “giving up” food. It involves redirecting our focus toward God’s will and purpose for us. The most common fast for Christians is fasting for spiritual breakthrough. However, you can fast for other reasons:
- Fast for the answer to a problem
- Fast to prepare for a specific work in ministry
- Fast to cleanse our mind and or our bodies of junk
- Fast to detox our bodies
- Fast to lose weight
- Fast for healing
Whatever the reason, it should involve God the Father leading and guiding us through the process. The goal of a fast should be the focus of the fast. That means that if you are preparing for a specific work, your focus is on that work and you would be reading, studying and listening for instructions on how God would use you in that work.
The next article will discuss fasting benefits.
