Is The Bible True?
Is the bible true? How do we know? The bible is one of the most popular books ever read, but is the it true and how do we tell if the bible real or just theory and philosophy? The bible is written in many translations and numerous commentaries. All written by ‘man,’ of course. The bible is God’s word inspired. He breathed into men to write words given by him. That’s what inspiration is. This is how inspiration works. Writers and artists especially can relate to inspiration. It is like energy breathed into you that has to be exerted at the time it is given. If you don’t act upon inspiration at the time it is given, you lose that moment. Outcome may be okay, but not as powerful when you act upon delayed inspiration.
Back to the bible. Let’s think about it. In short, we don’t know something unless we prove it to be so for ourselves. The only way to know if the bible is true is to read it, follow the examples, and note the outcome in your life. People believe and interpret the bible differently. Some of what we believe is learned. But what if we throw away everything we learned to seek out the truth for ourselves, independent of what anyone else thinks or what we have been taught. A lot of what we have been taught is not necessarily the truth. It is the ‘truth’ as we know it. After all we are all accountable for our own actions.
There is a famous line from a movie, “You can’t handle the truth.” If you knew without a doubt that you could find the truth, would you be willing to accept it? We have to be willing to know the truth if we want to interpret the bible properly. The bible is God talking to us. The bible provide examples of how we should live and examples of what happens if we live according to the examples it provides.
Our society is conducive to us decorating the truth so that it is more acceptable. We like to hear flattering words. We don’t want to hear that the speech we prepared needs more work, or the suit we bought and paid a lot of money for genuinely doesn’t work for us. We don’t want to hear that we were wrong for what we said. Tell us what makes us feel good. We are programmed to be more accepting of a watered down version of the truth. Is this really helpful to us? Not to say that we just blurt out the ‘truth’ for the truth’s sake when no one asks us our opinion or because we feel like people need to know what we deem as truth. This isn’t the point at all.
If we really want to know if the bible is true, we have to be willing to search it with a pure heart and receive any truth we find. The bible tells us in numerous places to search the scriptures, try His word to see if it is true. It also says in James 1:5 that if we ask for wisdom God will give it to us generously. Then Jesus said in John 14:17 that He would leave the spirit of truth after He left and that the world couldn’t receive it. Knowing the truth is a choice. If we seek the truth, we will find the truth. The truth brings us light, answers and results.
